Essential Walking Tour in Florence

Hit the streets in Florence with a local guide and see many of the famous attractions in one go in and around the historical center.

This tour is the perfect introduction to the city with no museums and no waiting in line. Gaze at awe-inspiring Renaissance art and architecture. Learn about Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Donatello, Machiavelli, and many more Florentines who contributed to shaping Western thought and culture.

With its palaces, churches, and piazzas, Florence provides a unique opportunity to step back in time to one of the most fascinating periods in western history:  the Renaissance. It is at this time that art, architecture, science, and humanism flourished.

During our time together we will explore Piazza Della Signoria, the center of political life in Florence since the 14th century with the prominent Palazzo Vecchio. This very square witnessed some of the key episodes of Florentine history, such as the return of the Medici in 1530, or The Bonfire of the Vanities instigated by Savonarola, who was then himself burned at the stake here in 1498. We will have the opportunity to discuss the delicate relationship between art and power and the contribution of the Medici family in turning Florence into the cradle of the Renaissance.

We will take time to look up at the awe-inspiring sculptures under the Loggia Dei Lanzi and admire the surrounding architecture, whilst familiarizing ourselves with the artistic and architectural achievements of the Florentines in the Renaissance. Strolling by Orsanmichele, we will explore how medieval crafts turned into Renaissance artistic leadership.

After crossing Ponte Vecchio, with its glittering jewelry shops, we will venture into the Oltrarno, the neighborhood that has retained traditional Florentine crafts such as leatherworking, silversmithing, printmaking, shoemaking –  to mention only a few. Our time together will end in front of the overwhelming Palazzo Pitti, now housing a number of important collections, among which the Galleria Palatina.

Spirit of Florence Walking Tour complements the most popular Florentine itineraries (such as David, the Duomo, and the Uffizi) perfectly. Once you have done the main museums, our informative and friendly local guide will take you on a journey of discovery that few tourists ever get to experience. This is the best Florence tour for first-timers!
