Rome Testaccio Food Tour
Explore one of the more vibrant food markets of the city, to be found in Testaccio, considered by Romans the birthplace of the Cucina Romana, a hotspot for foodies and food connoisseurs alike. See 2,000 years of foodie history and a fierce sense of Italian pride!
Learn about the lively food and fresh produce and look out for different varieties of in-season vegetables and fruit. Find out how these find their way into the local dishes through Campagna Amica which is a farmer’s organization. The fruit and vegetables at stalls are grown on the family’s own farm. The colorful stacks of produce change with the seasons and are 100% local.
Try samplings of bread, meat, fish, and cheeses on sale at the market and at stalls serving traditional Roman “street food”.
Watch the locals in search of the freshest mozzarella and the best pecorino. Enjoy the daily energy and vibrancy that brings the locals of Rome to this market.
Learn how this market developed into being home to the only market in Rome where you can find amazing ready-to-eat food, side by side with the best local ingredients Italy can offer.
Follow your guide by retracing the history of the area to its distant past when it used to accommodate the river harbor of ancient Rome. Witness to the turnover of food during the Republic and Imperial periods is Monte Testaccio, a man-made hill of ancient broken vessels hovering over the neighborhood.
Visit the Ex – Mattatoio, a former slaughterhouse, built at the end of the 1800s close to the cattle market. Around it the area grew to accommodate the increasing number of workers and their families, living on poor cuts, still nowadays a very distinctive aspect of the Roman culinary tradition.
The complex was closed down and relocated in 1975 and nowadays is an interesting example of industrial archaeology housing the faculty of Architecture, a music school, and a number of exhibition spaces among other businesses.
Continue to explore Testaccio and more food venues ending on via Galvani. Try many food samplings including Roman porchetta, salted fish from the mongers, Panino from Butcher Sergio, decadent take on carbonara made with veal, vegetarian artichoke sandwiches with shaved pecorino.
Get recipes for slow-cooked classics like trippa alla romana (tripe in tomato sauce.)
Choose to stay in the market area to see more of the stalls selling vintage clothes or flowers clustered on one side. Pick up some taralli to take home or little pizzette topped with onions to eat immediately.
Bread, meat, fish and cheeses are also on sale at the market, as well as stalls serving traditional Roman “street food”.
