Siena: Legend of the Palio tour with exclusive Contrada Museum

( Option to visit the Cathedral at the end with pre-reserved tickets )

Enjoy a small group (max 12 people) or a private tour and learn about the world’s greatest horse race Palio with an expert local guide.
The Palio is not merely a tourist event, but extraordinary evidence of a Medieval tradition that still represents the joyful celebration of Siena and its history twice a year, on July 2nd and August 16th. Listen to stories of the crowds and chaotic thrills at the thunderous, lawless, and medieval-style horse race in Siena.

On these dates the 17 Contradas (districts) into which the city is divided compete in the Piazza Del Campo, the main city square, to win glory in the eyes of the city and a very prestigious award: the “Palio”, a silk banner painted by great artists.

Walk with your knowledgeable local guide through hidden alleys and narrow streets and discover some of the 17 Contradas with their fascinating traditions. Be enchanted by the numerous tabernacles, property markers, banners, ornamental decorations that give color to the streets and make each district unique: each Contrada is represented by an animal or a symbol and has a long and extraordinary history which is rooted in Siena’s glorious Medieval past.

Get a deeply immersive experience in the Contrada’s daily life by visiting exclusively one of 17 museums where the most meaningful antique trophies and memories are preserved. Here you will learn from the voice of a local how this ancient heritage and tradition are still alive in people’s hearts and in Siena’s daily life.

Feel part of the race visiting the square where the Palio takes place: Piazza Del Campo. Discover how this seashell-shaped square (one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and one of the most beautiful in Italy) has been the result of an enlightened government of the 14th century and how it constitutes the iconic heart of civic life still at the present day.
Explore the enchanting neighborhoods of the Renaissance church of Provenzano and the magnificent square of the Cathedral, one of the best known Romanesque-Gothic monuments of Italy, both closely linked with the worship and glorification of the Virgin Mary, to whom the race is dedicated.

Find out how the sacred and the secular coexist in the lives of the Palio’s lovers and leave your guide with enough knowledge to be independent after the tour.

You can choose to extend your tour for an hour to visit the Siena Cathedral with pre-reserved tickets.
